Match 25        Mike Weir (International) halved with Justin Leonard (U.S.)
Match 26        Anthony Kim (U.S.) defeated Robert Allenby (International), 5&3
Match 27        Geoff Ogilvy (International) defeated Steve Stricker (U.S.), 2&1
Match 28        Sean O’Hair (U.S.) defeated Ernie Els (International), 6&4
Match 29        Ryo Ishikawa (International) defeated Kenny Perry (U.S.), 2&1
Match 30        Tim Clark (International) defeated Zach Johnson (U.S.), 4&3
Match 31        Tiger Woods (U.S.) defeated Y.E. Yang (International), 6&5
Match 32        Vijay Singh (International) halved with Lucas Glover (U.S.)
Match 33        Phil Mickelson (U.S.) defeated Retief Goosen (International), 2&1
Match 34        Angel Cabrera (International) defeated Jim Furyk (U.S.), 4&3

Match 23        Hunter Mahan (U.S.) defeated Camilo Villegas (International), 2&1
In his second Presidents Cup appearance, Hunter Mahan notched his first singles victory in either the Ryder Cup (2008) or The Presidents Cup (2007, 2009) with a 2&1 victory over Presidents Cup rookie Camilo Villegas.  Mahan was actually 2 down after two holes, thanks to bogeys on No. 1 and No. 2.  But he rallied with birdies on No. 5, 8 and 13 to climb to 1 up.  A bogey by Villegas on No. 17 ended the match.
Villegas finished with a 0-4-0 record, becoming the fourth “rookie” to go without a win and the first to lose four matches in The Presidents Cup (Mark Brooks went 0-3-0 in 1996; Carlos Franco went 0-2-1 in 1998; Rory Sabbatini went 0-3-1 in 2007).

Match 24        Stewart Cink (U.S.) defeated Adam Scott (International), 4&3
Stewart Cink waited until the final day to record his first point at this year’s Presidents Cup, posting a decisive 4&3 victory over Australia’s Adam Scott.  Cink’s win moves him to 3-1-0 in Singles competition at The Presidents Cup.
Scott, who started strong with a 2&1 win with Ernie Els in the Day One Foursomes, failed to record another point over the next three days of competition.

Match 25        Weir (International) halved with Leonard (U.S.)
Justin Leonard birdied the 18thhole to move to all square in his match against Mike Weir.  The two were prepared to move to a sudden-death playoff, starting on No. 9, but Tiger Woods meanwhile holed the putt that secured The Presidents Cup for the U.S. Team.  Therefore, the Weir/Leonard match was declared a halve.
For Leonard it was the first time he hasn’t lost his Sunday Singles match at The Presidents Cup since his first appearance in 2005 when he defeated Tim Clark, 4&3.  Leonard’s Singles record is now 1-3-1 and Weir moves to 3-1-1.

Match 26        Anthony Kim (U.S.) defeated Robert Allenby (International), 5&3
Anthony Kim posted a strong record in his first Presidents Cup appearance at 3-1-0.  His 5&3 defeat of Robert Allenby – a five-time Presidents Cup veteran – came more on the basis of Allenby’s four bogeys than anything.  The Aussie struggled with his driver today, as he has all week, hitting only 3 of 10 fairways.  For Kim’s part, he had his best driving day of the week, hitting 6 of 10 fairways.  He was 19 of 50 for the week.

Match 27        Geoff Ogilvy (International) defeated Steve Stricker (U.S.), 2&1
Geoff Ogilvy, a two-time Accenture Match Play Championship winner (2006, 2009), was strong again in Sunday Singles, posting a 2&1 record over until-then unbeaten Steve Stricker.  Ogilvy has faced Stricker before – he defeated him 4&3 during Round 1 of the 2007 Accenture Match Play Championship and defeated him 1 up in the Sunday Singles of the 2007 Presidents Cup.
Stricker finishes with a 4-1-0 record, his best performance at The Presidents Cup (1996, 2007) or Ryder Cup (2008).

Match 28        Sean O’Hair (U.S.) defeated Ernie Els (International), 6&4
After losing his first two matches of the week in his first Presidents Cup appearance, Sean O’Hair scored 2-1/2 points in the final two days to post a 2-2-1 record.  He birdied the first two holes on Sunday and never looked back, never losing a hole to Els, who was handed his worst defeat in Sunday Singles.  He lost to Tiger Woods in 2003, 4&3.

Match 29        Ryo Ishikawa (International) defeated Kenny Perry (U.S.), 2&1
With approximately 80 Japanese journalists and photographers following his every move this week, 18-year-old Ryo Ishikawa held his own in his first Presidents Cup appearance, going 3-2-0.  As the youngest competitor in Presidents Cup history, Ishikawa faced the fourth-oldest competitor in Presidents Cup history in 49-year-old Kenny Perry.
At 3-2-0, Ishikawa posted the best performance by a rookie on the International Team since Adam Scott went 3-2-0 in 2003.
The loss gave Perry a 1-3-0 record, matching his worst performance in The Presidents Cup (1-3-0, 2005).  Perry had won his two previous Singles matches (2005, defeated Mark Hensby; 2003, defeated Nick Price).

Match 30        Tim Clark (International) defeated Zach Johnson (U.S.), 4&3
In a match that featured 13 birdies – Tim Clark (8) and Johnson (5) – Clark earned his first victory in Sunday Singles with a 4&3 win over Johnson.  Clark finishes with a 2-2-1 record in this year’s Presidents Cup; he has scored at least two points in all three career appearances in the competition (2-3-0 in 2003; 2-2-1 in 2005).
Johnson is now 0-2-0 in Sunday Singles at The Presidents Cup (and 0-1-0 at the Ryder Cup).

Match 31        Tiger Woods (U.S.) defeated Y.E. Yang (International), 6&5
In a 2009 PGA Championship rematch, Tiger Woods got the best of Y.E. Yang with a decisive 6&5 victory to go 5-0-0.  Woods joins only two other competitors in The Presidents Cup history who have played five matches and won each of them: Mark O’Meara (1996) and Shigeki Maruyama (1998).

The 6&5 victory falls in line with several of Woods’ decisive wins this week:
Day One Foursomes: Woods/Steve Stricker (U.S.) defeated Ogilvy/Ishikawa (International), 6&4
Day Two Four-ball: Woods/Stricker (U.S.) defeated Ogilvy/Cabrera (International), 5&3
Day Three Four-ball: Woods/Stricker (U.S.) defeated Ishikawa/Yang (International), 4&2
Day Three Foursomes: Woods/Stricker (U.S.) defeated Weir/Clark (International), 1 up
Woods, who took the lead after Day Three Four-ball for most matches won in The Presidents Cup history, extends his lead with a win in Sunday Singles: Tiger Woods (18); Davis Love III (16), Vijay Singh (16), Ernie Els, (16); Phil Mickelson (15) and Jim Furyk (15).

Match 32        Vijay Singh (International) halved with Lucas Glover (U.S.)
Even though The Presidents Cup was already decided, Lucas Glover fought hard over the closing stretch of holes to earn a half-point – against eight-time Presidents Cup veteran Vijay Singh.  Glover, 2 down with four to play, won holes No. 15-16 to tie the match.  The pair matched bogeys on No. 17 and pars on No. 18 to finish all square.
Glover’s play over the closing stretch ensured he would not go 0-4-0 in this week’s competition.
For Singh, he finishes without a loss on his card at 2-0-3.  Singh hasn’t won a Singles match at The Presidents Cup since 2003, his only victory in the format.  He is now 1-4-3 in Sunday Singles.
Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson are the only two players who have competed in every Presidents Cup; Singh owns the record for most matches played at 40 (including today; Mickelson has participated in 38 matches).

Match 33        Phil Mickelson (U.S.) defeated Retief Goosen (International), 2&1
Phil Mickelson’s win in Sunday Singles gave him a 4-0-1 record for the week, his best performance at The Presidents Cup in eight appearances.  Mickelson has never won four matches at The Presidents Cup previously.
Mickelson hadn’t won a Sunday Singles match in his first six appearances, but has now won his last two and has a 2-3-3 record in Singles.
Retief Goosen defeated Mickelson in Sunday Singles, 2&1, at the 2003 Presidents Cup.

Match 34        Angel Cabrera (International) defeated Jim Furyk (U.S.), 4&3
Angel Cabrera handed Jim Furyk his second consecutive defeat in Sunday Singles at The Presidents Cup with a decisive 4&3 victory.  Furyk was 4-0 on Sunday at The Presidents Cup until losing to Retief Goosen in 2007 and Cabrera today.
Cabrera’s win was his first point scored this week and improves his career Presidents Cup Singles record to 2-0-1.

CUMMULATIVE RESULTS
United States 12-1/2, International 9-1/2

Two players have a perfect 4-0-0 record after Day Three: Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods for the U.S. Team.  Only two players in The Presidents Cup history have posted a 5-0-0 record: Mark O’Meara (1996) and Shigeki Maruyama (1998).

Players who went 2-0-0 today: Jim Furyk, Robert Allenby, Steve Stricker/Tiger Woods.

By teaming up with Sean O’Hair for a 5&3 victory over Camilo Villegas/Retief Goosen in the morning foursomes matches, Phil Mickelson became the first player in Presidents Cup history to win his first three matches with three separate partners. The only other players to win three matches in one event with three different partners are Tiger Woods (2007, match 1-Charles Howell III, match 3- Jim Furyk and match 4- David Toms) and David Toms (2007, match 1- Jim Furyk, match 3- Zach Johnson, match 4- Tiger Woods).

Match 18        Kim/Furyk (U.S.) defeated Cabrera/Scott (International), 2 up

Similar to when they matched up in the Day Two four-ball, Jim Furyk/Anthony Kim didn’t hit many fairways today, but this time they managed to win.  Furyk/Kim hit only seven/three fairways today, respectively (and nine/five fairways on Friday)

Kim didn’t have a birdie until the 15thhole, but it was clutch when he rolled in a 9-foot birdie putt to maintain the U.S. Team’s 2 up lead, as the Internationals were already in for birdie.  After Adam Scott birdied to go 1 down with two to play, Kim again matched Cabrera’s birdie to maintain the U.S. Team’s 1 up lead.  An eagle conceded to Jim Furyk on 17 ended the match.

Furyk went 2-0-0 in Day Three.

Cabrera is 0-3-0 heading into Sunday Singles.

Match 19        Ogilvy/Allenby (International) defeated Cink/Glover (U.S.), 2&1

Australian’s Geoff Ogilvy/Robert Allenby teamed together for the first time in The Presidents Cup and won 2&1 over Stewart Cink/Lucas Glover.  The victory gave Ogilvy, who sat out in the morning foursomes, his first point of the week.

Allenby was 2-0-0 in Day Three.

With the loss, Stewart Cink/Lucas Glover are 0-3-0 as a team (Day One foursomes and Day Two and Three four-ball).  Glover is now 0-4-0 in four-ball competition at The Presidents Cup.

Match 20        Els/Weir (International) defeated Johnson/Leonard (U.S.), 5&3

Ernie Els/Mike Weir never lost a hole today in their match against Zach Johnson/Justin Leonard.  The International Team carded seven birdies in 14 holes, with Els making birdie on four of the last six.

Els moves into solo second in The Presidents Cup history for most four-ball matches won, passing Davis Love III: Vijay Singh (9); Ernie Els (8); Mike Weir and  Davis Love III (7);  Retief Goosen and Phil Mickelson (6).

Match 21        Woods/Stricker (U.S.) defeated Ishikawa/Yang (International), 4&2

With two wins on Day Three, Tiger Woods/Steve Stricker are undefeated after four matches, becoming the first partners to go 4-0-0 in The Presidents Cup.  They lost four holes today to Presidents Cup rookies Ryo Ishikawa/Y.E. Yang, but three of those came after the U.S. Team was dormie – 6 up after hole No. 12.  Ishikawa/Yang birdied No. 13-15, but Woods made a 5’5” birdie on the 16thhole to win, 4&2.

While Woods was the hero in the morning foursomes, Stricker made seven of the pair’s eight birdies in the afternoon four-ball.

At 4-0-0, Woods and Stricker are guaranteed their best performances in The Presidents Cup.  Woods’ and Stricker’s previous best records are both 3-2-0 (2007, 2003, 2000 for Woods; 2007 for Stricker).

Woods now owns the record for most matches won in The Presidents Cup history: Tiger Woods (17); Davis Love III (16), Vijay Singh (16), Ernie Els, (16); Jim Furyk (14), Phil Mickelson (14).

Match 22        Singh/Clark (International) halved with Mickelson/O’Hair (U.S.)

Phil Mickelson/Sean O’Hair took Vijay Singh/Tim Clark to the 18th hole, where both teams made par to ensure a half point for each.  Tim Clark was the hero in the Day Two four-ball, holing a 14-foot eagle putt on the 18th green to post a 1 up victory with Vijay Singh over Lucas Glover/Stewart Cink.  He nearly matched those heroics today, as his 25-foot birdie putt on 18 just lipped out.

Despite a halve today, Vijay Singh maintains his lead in The Presidents Cup history for most four-ball matches won: Vijay Singh (9); Davis Love III (7), Ernie Els (7); Retief Goosen (6), Phil Mickelson (6), Mike Weir (6).

Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson are the only two players who have competed in every Presidents Cup, but Singh owns the record for most matches played at 39 (including today; Mickelson has participated in 37 matches).

Sean O’Hair was 0-2-0 in his first Presidents Cup appearance until teaming up with Phil Mickelson today to win 1-1/2 points.

CUMMULATIVE RESULTS

United States 6-1/2, International 5-1/2

Six players have a perfect 2-0-0 record after Day Two: Phil Mickelson, Zach Johnson, Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods for the U.S. Team; and Ernie Els and Vijay Singh for the International Team.

Match 7 - Mickelson/ Leonard (U.S.) defeated Goosen/Scott (International), 3&2

In their first time being paired together in either The Presidents Cup or the Ryder Cup, Phil Mickelson/Justin Leonard prevailed with a 3&2 victory over Retief Goosen/Adam Scott.  In a match that went back and forth throughout the day, the U.S. Team made eight birdies to the International’s five.

Despite hitting only 7 of 12 fairways today, Mickelson was responsible for five of the U.S. Team’s birdies.  Mickelson is now 2-0-0, his best start at The Presidents Cup since 2000 when he went 2-0-0 the first two days and finished with a 3-2-0 record.

Leonard rebounded from the short missed putt on 18 yesterday that would have sealed a full point for the U.S. Team by closing out today’s match with birdies on two of the final three holes.  He made a 14-foot putt on the 14th hole for birdie to take the U.S. Team to 2 up and then closed out the match with an 11’4” putt for birdie on No. 16.

Retief Goosen/Adam Scott have now been paired together in The Presidents Cup six times, but this is their first defeat.  They were 3-0-2 heading into this year’s event, with a 2-0-1 record in four-ball.

Match 8- Els/ Weir (International) defeated Furyk/Kim (U.S.), 2 up

Ernie Els/Mike Weir played in their third consecutive four-ball match at The Presidents Cup and remain undefeated (2-0-0 in 2007).

Anthony Kim is Jim Furyk’s 13th different partner in The Presidents Cup.  The only other time Furyk was paired with a Presidents Cup “rookie,” he won the match (2000 with Hal Sutton, defeated Robert Allenby/Stuart Appleby, 1 up).

Furky/Kim hit only nine/five fairways today, respectively.

Els moves into a tie for second in The Presidents Cup history for most four-ball matches won: Vijay Singh (9); Davis Love III (7); Ernie Els (7).

By losing today, Kim, the only rookie to win in Day One, won’t have the chance to match the undefeated records posted by four other rookies in The Presidents Cup history: Shigeki Maruyama (5-0-0, 1998); Mark O’Meara (5-0-0, 1996); David Duval (4-0-0, 1996); Stewart Cink (4-0-0, 2000).

Match 9- Ishikawa/Yang (International) defeated Perry/O’Hair (U.S.), 4&3

Ryo Ishikawa/Y.E. Yang paired up today as two of the five rookies in this year’s Presidents Cup and defeated Kenny Perry/Sean O’Hair, 4 and 3.  The last time two rookies won a match together was 2003 when it happened three times: Fred Funk/David Toms in Day Two foursomes; Peter Lonard/Stephen Leaney in Day Three four-ball; and Adam Scott/K.J. Choi in Day Three four-ball.

Key to the finish of the match was Yang with birdies on 13 and 14, holing putts from 16’7” and 21’2”, respectively.

Match 9 featured the fourth-oldest player in The Presidents Cup history (Kenny Perry, 49) and the youngest player in event history (Ryo Ishikawa, 18).  Perry won his first PGA TOUR event in May 1991, five months before Ishikawa was born.

Match 10- Singh/Clark (International) defeated Glover/Cink (U.S.), 1 up

Vijay Singh/Tim Clark defeated Lucas Glover/Stewart Cink, 1 up, thanks to a 14-foot eagle putt on the 18th green made by Tim Clark.  Clark was the only one of the four players in Match 10 to reach the 18th green in two.

Tim Clark is now 4-0-1 in four-ball competition at The Presidents Cup.

Vijay Singh maintains his lead in The Presidents Cup history for most four-ball matches won: Vijay Singh (9); Davis Love III (7); Ernie Els (7).

Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson are the only two players who have competed in every Presidents Cup, but Singh owns the record for most matches played at 37 (including today; Mickelson has participated in 35 matches).  After today’s four-ball, Singh tied Davis Love III’s all-time Presidents Cup record for most matches won with 16.

Glover is 0-3-0 in four-ball competition at The Presidents Cup.

Match 11 - Johnson/Mahan (U.S.) defeated Allenby/Villegas(International), 2&1

Hunter Mahan made a 22-foot birdie putt to halve the 15th hole and keep his team at 2 up. On the 16th hole, Zach Johnson knocked a wedge to nine feet, but missed his birdie putt for an opportunity to close the match. On the 17th hole, Johnson again hit wedge inside 10 feet, this time making his six-foot putt on top of a birdie by Robert Allenby to have the hole and win their match 2 up.

Johnson is now 2-0 after winning his match 2 up on Thursday.

Match 12 - Stricker/Woods (U.S.) defeated Ogilvy/Cabrera (International), 5&3

Tiger Woods/Steve Stricker kept the momentum going from their 6&4 win in Day One, defeating Geoff Ogilvy/Angel Cabrera in the Day Two four-ball matches, 5&3.  Woods/Stricker lost only one hole today, when Cabrera made birdie on No. 3 to get back to all square.  That’s the only hole lost by the U.S. duo in the first two days of competition.

Ogilvy is 0-2-0, after facing Woods/Stricker both days.

Woods is off to his best start in six appearances in The Presidents Cup.  He has never won his first two matches at a Presidents Cup.

UPDATE 5

DAY ONE - RESULTS
Foursome Matches – United States 3-1/2, International 2-1/2
Match 1        Kim/Mickelson (U.S.) defeated Weir/Clark (International), 3&2
Match 2        Scott/Els (International) defeated Mahan/O’Hair, 2&1
Match 3        Singh/Allenby (International) defeated Glover/Cink (U.S.), 1 up
Match 4        Perry/Johnson (U.S.) defeated Cabrera/Villegas (International), 2 up
Match 5        Woods/Stricker (U.S.) defeated Ogilvy/Ishikawa (International), 6&4
Match 6        Goosen/Yang (International) halved with Furyk/Leonard (U.S.)

Match 1
Phil Mickelson/Anthony Kim made four consecutive birdies on holes No. 13-16 to close out their match against Mike Weir/Tim Clark.  The U.S. duo made putts of 6’3” (Mickelson), 18’ (Mickelson), 7’6” (Mickelson), and 10’4” (Kim).  The Internationals did not record a birdie all day, but stayed in the match thanks to bogeys by Mickelson/Kim on holes 2, 6, 7 and 9.
Kim is the only one of five rookies in this year’s Presidents Cup to win his match today (Y.E. Yang earned a half point).

Match 2
Adam Scott/Ernie Els defeated Hunter Mahan/Sean O’Hair, 2&1.  Scott and Els went without a birdie on the card until the final two holes of the match.  Scott’s approach shot on the par-4 16th landed just 18 inches from the cup and Els tapped in for birdie to put the twosome 2 up.  Both teams made birdie on 17.
Scott was the only captain’s pick to win his match today.
Hunter Mahan lost his first foursomes match at The Presidents Cup (he was 2-0-0 in foursomes at the 2007 Presidents Cup, his first appearance in the event).

Match 3
Vijay Singh/Robert Allenby handed Lucas Glover his first loss in The Presidents Cup foursomes format (with partner Stewart Cink; they were defeated, 1 up).  Glover went 2-0-0 in foursomes in 2007, his first Presidents Cup appearance.
Robert Allenby won his first foursomes match since the 1996 Presidents Cup today.  Allenby, who did not play in the 2005 or 2007 Presidents Cup, improved his foursomes record to 3-5-1.
Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson are the only two players who have competed in every Presidents Cup, but Singh owns the record for most matches played at 36 (including today; Mickelson has participated in 34 matches).  After today’s foursomes, Singh moved one step closer to Davis Love III’s all-time Presidents Cup record for most matches won. Love has 16 wins in The Presidents Cup; Singh now has 15.

Match 4
Zach Johnson/Kenny Perry defeated Camilo Villegas/Angel Cabrera, 2 up.  Johnson won his third consecutive foursomes match (he was 2-0-0 in foursomes at the 2007 Presidents Cup, his first appearance in the event).

Match 5
In their first time being paired together in either The Presidents Cup or the Ryder Cup, Tiger Woods/Steve Stricker defeated Geoff Ogilvy/Ryo Ishikawa, 6&4.  The victory margin was the largest for Woods in The Presidents Cup foursomes since he and Notah Begay III defeated Vijay Singh/Ernie Els, 6&5, in 2000.  Woods/Stricker never lost a hole all day and recorded six birdies, compared to two birdies and two bogeys by the Internationals.
Woods/Stricker missed only two greens (No. 7, missed by Stricker; and No. 8, missed by Woods) and one fairway (No. 7, missed by Woods) today.
Woods maintains his position as the all-time leader in The Presidents Cup foursomes matches won (8).  Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh, who also won today, are second with 7.

Match 6
In the only halved match of the day, Justin Leonard missed a 14-inch putt that would have won the match for the U.S. Team (with Jim Furyk) against Retief Goosen/Y.E. Yang.  The U.S. Team was 1 up headed to 18.  Yang’s approach landed just 4 feet from the hole and Goosen made the putt for birdie.  Leonard then missed the birdie to halve the hole and win the match 1 up.

UPDATE 2:

There is some talk about Phil Mickelson having some pain and tightness in his lower back.  He has discussed this with Fred Couples and is only playing 9 hole practice rounds hoping it won't get any worse.  Phil has claimed it's not as bad as some think and that he believes everything will be just fine...

More to follow...

The eighth Presidents Cup at Harding Park is about to start!  All of us Northern California residence are incredibly lucky to have the tournament so close to our homes. San Francisco is only the second U.S. city selected to host the event and the first location on the West Coast.

Below is a couple of notes regarding eligibility and structure and scoring

Eligibility

Members of the 2009 U.S. Team were selected based on official earnings from the start of the 2008 season through the 2009 PGA Championship, plus two Captain's Picks. The U.S. team is:

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, Kenny Perry, Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink, Sean O'Hair, Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim, Justin Leonard, Hunter Mahan and Lucas Glover.  The U.S. Captain is Fred Couples.

The International Team players for the 2009 Presidents Cup were chosen on the basis of the Official World Golf Ranking, plus two Captain's Picks. Players eligible for the European Ryder Cup team are not included in the selection process. The International team is:

Geoff Ogilvy, Vijay Singh, Camilo Villegas, Retief Goosen, Ernie Els, Angel Cabrera, Mike Weir, Robert Allenby, Y.E. Yang, Tim Clark, Adam Scott and Ryo Ishikawa.  The International team is Captained by Greg Norman.

Structure and scoring

The Presidents Cup competition consists of 34 matches:
• 11 Foursomes (alternate shot)
• 11 Four-ball (better ball) matches
• 12 Singles matches involving all players on the final Sunday

All matches are worth one point each, for a total of 34 points. Each side receives half a point if the match finishes all-square.

Singles matches all square after 18 holes will go to extra holes until a team winner is determined. In a change inspired by the events of the 2003 Presidents Cup, if the match is deadlocked at the end of Singles play, the competition will be deemed a tie, and the teams will share The Presidents Cup.

Check back for regular updates throughout the tournament!

-Enjoy!
