The two main aspects in putting are direction and speed. Here are two drills to help you focus on each aspect.
DIRECTION
Visualize a “Lane” rather than a “Line”
When attempting putts from a shorter distance (12 feet and in), focus more on direction. Visualize a “lane”, rather than a line, on which to roll the ball. Imagine a stripe about 4 1/4 inches wide (the diameter of the hole) with both the ball and the hole resting on the stripe. With that kind of image, you will be more likely to have your ball remain within that stripe, or “lane” as it rolls towards the hole. The normal “line” visualization leaves little margin for error, while a ball rolling within the “lane” is likely to hit the hole and drop in.
SPEED
Visualize a 3-Foot Circle Around the Hole
For longer putts (20 to 30 feet), your primary focus should be more on speed. Visualize a circle around the hole about 3 feet in diameter and putt to that circle. Even if your direction is off, focusing on speed should leave you with no more than a three footer for your second putt.
