Q&A With Nick Watney

Written by: Vince Mastracco 7:29 PM PST - 6/25/2008

On his iPod: I have pretty much exclusively hip hop music.

Playing Tiger Woods video: I don't. I play enough golf. I play Halo pretty much exclusively.

Favorite grass: Poa annua. Not really, but this week (asked at Nissan Open, Los Angeles), we have poa annua (greens).

Favorite Tour memory so far: Holing a bunker shot on the 72nd hole at Pebble Beach last year. My whole family was there. It wasn't to win the tournament but it was to have a good finish. I would say that was the coolest part so far.

Favorite pairing: I played with Phil (Mickelson) and Sergio (Garcia) at the Wachovia Championship. It was fun to be in that atmosphere with them.

About Fresno: I think one of the coolest things is the way the community gets behind the sports at Fresno State.

College hangout: I didn't really go out a lot. Just my apartment to relax.

On (current) swing coach Butch Harmon: His knowledge and his eye are incredible. His storytelling is really good. But, sometimes he has a couple of reruns.

Embarrassing moment: On the eleventh hole at Pebble in the second round (2007), I shanked a ball out of bounds. It was the first time that has ever happened. It was a shock. Then you have to hit the same shot right after that. It was not fun.

Proudest moment: One of the proudest days was when I first got my tour card. And I hope when I win a (PGA Tour) tournament.

Tour players that have helped: Kirk Triplett helped me a lot, just kind of looked after me a little bit. Jeff Sluman's been really good to me. Bo Van Pelt, Mike Springer, all those guys.

Top 5 most frequent cell phone calls: My mom, my girlfriend, my roommate and just a couple of other friends.

Tour life as a bachelor: It's pretty basic. Come out, practice, play, whatever. Golf usually takes up most of the day. Go back to the room, get some food. Take it easy. Start all over again.
