David Grieve, President of A&C Ventures, Inc., when not working with one of their many clients such as Rite Aid, Office Depot or Pier 1 Imports, will most likely be found either on a golf course or at the Grieve Family Vineyard. With an index that hovers around 3.0 and memberships in the Sonoma Golf Club, Olympic Club, Santa Rosa's Mayacama Golf Club and the Pronghorn Club in Bend, OR, suffice it to say that golf is one of his passions. In fact he emphatically stated “Golf is one of the reasons I work!” Although David plays in numerous Pro Ams including the Bob Hope, AT&T, Callaway and the Dunhill, his favorite event is the Champions Tour Charles Schwab Cup which is held at the Sonoma Golf Club. As a firm believer in community involvement, he works as the Tournament General Chair with Leon Gilmore, the events Executive Director, to help ensure both substantial donations to local charities as well as a well run and memorable tournament.
He mentioned that playing in Pro Ams has given him the opportunity to spend time with many PGA tour players. Players on top of David's list of fun people include Scott McCarron, Steve Elkington, David Duval, Mark McNulty, Jeff Sluman, and Jerry Pate. He also shared some fond golf memories of St. Andrews, Loch Lomond and Carnoustie during a trip to Scotland with PGA Pro Scott McCarron when they played in the Dunhill Championships. During a practice round they played with Sean O'Hair. During the First Round David said he'll never forget hitting his first drive of the day about 350 yards on the 10th at Carnoustie into the group ahead which included Padrig Harrington, Ian Poulter, J.P. McManus and Dennis Hopper. He didn't share how the rest of the round went, but at dinner that evening Padraig Harrington told him that “you should've frigging quit right then!”
In the 1980's a doctor friend introduced David to fine wines, and he started collecting, although he admits preferring to drink it rather than cellaring it. The sauvignon blanc grapes are grown on 10 acres of their estate which is located in the Lovall Valley (bordered by Sonoma, Carneros and Mt Veeder AVA's). Using only grapes from their vineyard, David and winemaker Michael Terrian envision producing a premium estate-grown wine. To achieve this they have tried various types of barrels including stainless steel and French oak. The 2008 Grieve Family Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is, without doubt, one of the best white wines I've ever enjoyed! In one word, outstanding! David's home reflects both his love of golf and fine wine. In addition to the vineyard, there is a 900 sq ft putting green with 2 bunkers and 3 sets of tees which range from about 50 to 120 yards - needless to say, his short game is one of his strengths.
