It’s here! Finally, a course that is fair for both the short hitters, those that take it deep, and even players who think they are as long as John Daly. California’s first John Daly Signature Course is now open for play! Located at the Rolling Hills Casino in Corning, Sevillano Links is designed to provide a challenging but fair golfing experience for golfers of every skill level. With 5 sets of tees ranging from 5467 to 7813 yards, players can tee it up using the set best suited for their igame - and length. There is also a course within the course, available only to groups that reserve the entire course. It is a PAR FIVE course - that’s right, par 5, not par 3! Working with Daly and course architect Mike Stark, Jim Duhig of Arrow Golf Construction built what is probably the most unique layout in the country! This par 5 course is a true “Grip It And Rip It” track. Playing to 10,500 - that’s right, TEN THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED - yards with a par of 91, it features 17 par 5’s and a par 6. If you have a group looking for a unique golfing experience, they’ll find it at Sevillano Links.
Before playing you might want to warm up on their all grass tees driving range, featuring multiple target greens and the same rolling terrain you’ll ˆencounter on the course. There’s also a chipping green and a large putting green, plus a smaller putting green near the 1st tee. Before teeing it up you have to take in the fantastic views! Located in the middle of the Sacramento Valley, the course is framed by the Sierra’s to the east and the Mayacamas of the Pacific Coast Range to the west. Spread out over almost 400 acres, opposed to the traditional 180 or less, Sevillano Links is a treat for the eyes! A true highlands links style course, comparable to those found in the inland areas of Scotland, it features rolling fairways which follow the natural terrain. Native grasses are prevalent, providing an eye catching contrast between the lush green bermuda fairways and the places you don’t wankt your ball to end up. Course Superintendent Matt Hoyt and his crew have done an outstanding job getting this John Daly Signature Course ready for play. The large and undulating bent grass greens seem pristine, the 50 bunkers are positioned in such a way that good shots will not be penalized, and the Bermuda fairways ensure great lies for approach shots. Hoyt mentioned that in the winter they will over seed the bermuda rough, resulting in maintaining an eye catching contrast when the Bermuda becomes dormant.
The enthusiasm about the course of Director of Golf Brian Dahmer, formerly at Lakeridge in Reno, is contagious! The front side is fairly traditional with 2 par 5’s and 1 par 3, while the back 9 has 3 par 5’s and 3 par 3’s. The par 5 #1 is a great starting hole! It is 444 yards from the forward (Olive) tees, stretching to 598 from the John Daly tees.¡ The 7th hole, a par 5 dogleg left, playing from 462 to 585 yards, with a split fairway is a challenge! It is a 3 shot hole if you play it safe and go down the right side, but if you trust your accuracy with the driver, go for the split fairway on the left and it is reachable in 2 for long hitters. How about a true ‘risk - reward’ hole? Ranging from 477 yards to 624, the par 5 15th just might be the epitome! The tees are elevated, and then it is uphill from the landing areas - yes, another split fairway - with a sharp dogleg to the green. Prudence dictates playing it safe and going straight, but if you’re into taking chances, go for the small split fairway on the left. Of course it requires a 200 yard plus carry over water to a landing area that looks like a large green from the tee. 17, a 441 yard par 4 from the Championship tees requires a straight tee shot. With native grasses on the right and a lake - part of the Hunt and Field Club - Íalong the entire left side, hitting anything but green grass means a bogey or worse. Next comes a finishing hole and a half! It ranges from 561 yards from the front tees to 686 from the Daly tees… nuff said? After being out on the course, then getting a preview of the 14,000 square foot club house featuring a sports bar along with magnificent views of the course and Mayacamas from the 120 foot long deck, I thought that the green fees had to be $100 plus. Wrong! I couldn’t believe it when Office Manager Amy Gonczerluk told me the fees! They range from $45 to $65, including golf car - there is a local rate for residents of Tehema Butte, Glenn and Shasta Counties. Of course there are twilight rates, and because of the summer heat they actually will at 11AM during July and August.
After your round you might sit out on the club house deck and replay it over your favorite adult beverage while taking in the terrific view, or if you didn’t fare too well in your skins or other game, maybe ¶try to recoup your loss at the Rolling Hills Casino which is just across the parking lot. Not only is Sevillano Links destined to become one of Northern California’s premier destination courses, it offers amenities rarely, if ever, found at a championship course. The course and well above average clubhouse coupled with the Rolling Hills Casino, Ramada Inn and Suites, Vagabond Inn Executive, plus a Hunt and Field Club featuring fishing and pheasant or duck hunting make Sevillano Links a definite must play!
