New York City is arguably the most popular travel destination in the world. People from across the globe come to the Big Apple for a plethora of reasons during the holidays. Some come to visit family, others for pleasure. Some come to see the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, others for Broadway shows. And escaping on a private jet makes this destination a breeze. For roughly $55,000 round trip, a family of 6 can travel in pure luxury.
Even with an infinite number of motives for heading to New York there is one constant for travelers who like to play golf: Pound Ridge Golf Club. Located roughly 40 miles outside of Manhattan in Westchester County, Pound Ridge has emerged as the New York City-area’s most sought after golfing experience and the only Pete Dye-designed course in the state.
Since opening in 2008, golfers have flocked to the course to soak up the work of one of golf’s most acclaimed designers. The project took over 10 years to build and an investment of $40 million by owner Ken Wang, younger brother of fashion designer Vera Wang.
Crafted by Dye and his son Perry, Pound Ridge Golf Club is hewn from 172 acres of magnificent cliffs, streams and wooded hills. Dramatic rock formations and boulders were left onsite, creating one of the most visually stunning settings for golf in the U.S. More than 14,000-linear-feet of rock wall surround trees, wetlands and water hazards.
These frame contoured fairways which wind through hardwood forests and fescue mounds leading to open meadows with picturesque green complexes. The property features some of the highest points in the region, with a number of tee boxes offering expansive vistas of the surrounding country.
Avid and recreational golfers alike are not the only ones to rave about Dye’s New York creation. Over the past three years, Pound Ridge has earned world-class accolades from Golf Digest, GOLF Magazine, Golfweek, AskMen.com and LINKS Magazine.
From November 1 to December 31, Pound Ridge “off-season rates” are in effect and golfers can play one of Westchester County’s only daily fee courses for $150 per round before 2 p.m. and $100 after, seven days a week.
All rates include a golf cart or pull cart, Pound Ridge yardage book, bottled water, player’s towel and complimentary use of the driving range, newly-designed sunken chipping area and other practice facilities.
The only thing that may be more appealing than the golf itself is Pound Ridge’s proximity to New York City. They partner with seven area hotel properties in the Metropolitan area to offer full golf concierge services including complimentary rental clubs/shoes ($100 value), booking tee times and arranging transportation.
Guests can choose from a variety of accommodation partners including Mandarin Oriental and the Marriott Marquis in New York City; Castle on the Hudson and The Ritz-Carlton in Westchester County; and Hyatt Regency Greenwich, Delamar Greenwich Harbor and the Stamford Marriott Hotel and Spa in Connecticut.
Pound Ridge’s location also allows golfers to take advantage of the dining, shopping and sightseeing that New York City has to offer. Whether Pound Ridge augments a New York City vacation or vice versa, golfers will have no problem occupying their time when they’re not on the course.
